Once you’ve declared your major, it’s important that you establish regular contact with your advisor, your professors, and with the department office staff. They can be tremendous resources for you and help you maximize your college experience. For example, there might be scholarships, internships or research opportunities, for which you qualify. To find out what’s available – and the eligibility requirements – contact your advisor or the department office.
- Workshops, webinars, internships, and field opportunities can play an integral part in your preparation for the future. The faculty and staff in your major area may provide you with wonderful networking opportunities.
- Extracurricular activities can enhance your classroom experiences. There are more than 150 clubs and organizations, including the Geology Club for you to consider. Most can help you hone your leadership skills, help you connect with students who share your interests, and in some cases, expand your academic experience.
- Undergraduate Research in the Geology & Environmental Geosciences Department provides diverse opportunities for students to conduct scholarly research in the laboratory and field in close collaboration with a faculty mentor. Major portions of the research carried out in the department is done or aided by undergraduates.
- South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation (SCAMP) SCAMP provides mentoring and summer-research opportunities for students from underrepresented populations (African American, Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islanders) who want to pursue a degree in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines offered from the School of Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering.
